Database Design and Production
Michael Korican has been creating databases for over fifteen years, mainly with FileMaker Pro but also with HyperCard. Here are some of his database-enabled websites and other database projects:
FileMaker Pro
FileMaker Pro is a cross-platform database application originally released by Apple in 1990.
Online FileMaker Databases
iDEV
I developed the iDEV system for the British Columbia Ministry of Education. Carefully designed screens use Instant Web Publishing to allow remote users to collaborate on new examination questions and answers.
Matrix Planning Associates
This website uses Lasso middleware to display FileMaker Pro data on the Internet. The client uploads a revised database to add their latest projects. (See Recent Projects.)
Blendon Information Services
This Lasso-driven FileMaker Pro website has online news and directory systems. (See News and Guide buttons.)
EveryRose
This Lasso site relates a rose database with a gardeners' comments database - anyone can leave a note with their experiences with a rose. (See Darby.)
Plant A Memory
This shopping cart system, built with FileMaker and Lasso, allows brides-to-be to order favors for their weddings. (See Seed Favors/Plantable Ornaments/Hearts.)
Cogent Strategies International
All the content on this economic development website is generated on the fly by Lasso from FileMaker Pro. The client uses online forms to manage their CMS.
Offline Filemaker Databases
Item Bank
I migrated the British Columbia Ministry of Education's Item Bank from version 6 to 8, merging separate databases into one file and maintained the relational system for over two years.
Where Can I Buy a Car Online Pages and News
I created two systems for this automotive metasite: one for over 1,000 reviews and another for daily news clips. Each system produces HTML code that is then uploaded to the website.
Production Central
I created this FileMaker solution for my independent filmmaking projects. It has sections for budgeting, contacts, script breakdowns, call sheets, receipts, and agreements. It produces PDF reports and can email cast and crew.
HyperCard
HyperCard was a graphical hypermedia database application from Apple first released in 1987 that used a programming language called HyperTalk.
I'm proud of two stacks I created using HyperCard:
HTML Sketcher
This tool allowed the user to fill out fields on a number of cards and then click one button to create a series of valid HTML pages. To standardize pages, there were provisions for common headers and footers.
HyperHaiku
This stack would generate haiku poems, randomly choosing lines of five or seven syllables.
